Malcolm Appleby
Malcolm Appleby b.1946 is the UK’s leading artist engraver who established his first studio in Scotland in 1969. He engraves directly on precious metals, or engraves steel dies as the basis for multiples and editions. His ability to create vibrant line drawings on metal surfaces has given him an international client base and he has work in many museum, as well as private collections including V & A Museum, London and National Museums, Edinburgh. Most of his work is an expression of his affinity with the rhythms of the natural world – he has established a wonderful garden and woodland in his current Perthshire home. The recently created Gingko leaf brooches exhibited are expertly interpreted through his flowing line achieved through hand piercing and hand engraving.
“I’m passionate about the amount of energy and power that springs from the ancient craft of engraving. Works of art should be made for everyone to enjoy. Engraving is central to my design and art; it is from engraving that my other skills have evolved.’
