This one-day workshop will introduce participants to the simple technique of Drypoint Etching and Chine Collé using botanical specimens, found objects and wildlife from the Botanic Garden as inspiration. Drypoint is the simplest and most direct form of intaglio fine art printmaking. It lends itself to drawing and mark making. Chine collé describes the technique of adding colour and texture, using starch paste and lightweight archival papers.
This is a hands-on workshop taught by visual artist and educator, Susie Turner. Participants will learn how to transfer their drawings into unique fine art prints, using specialist tools and materials, and an etching press.

What to bring
Wear comfortable footwear, old clothes and bring along an apron. Gloves will be provided
You can bring along existing drawings and/or a selection of drawing pencils or fine pens for making a drawing on the day
Paper, printmaking materials, equipment and a detailed handout will be provided, as well as your source material (dried foliage, seedheads and a selection of ready-made illustrations)
Please bring along a portfolio or suitable folder for transporting your prints home
A packed lunch. Refreshments will be provided on the day.
About Susie Turner
Susie Turner works as a visual artist and educator with a specialism in Fine Art printmaking. She graduated in Fine Art Printmaking from Cambridge School of Art and gained an MA in Visual Arts / Printmaking at Camberwell College of Art. Before pursuing her interest in fine art printmaking, Susie initially trained and worked as an illustrator. Much of her artistic practice is inspired by the transient state of nature, patterns of growth and decay and the interdependency of people and nature. The landscape is a constant source of visual ideas and Susie often works directly with existing material, both ‘found’ and ‘made’.
Over the last 20 years Susie has helped raise the profile of print as a medium for learning by sharing her skills and knowledge with a wide range of learners. She has led workshops on behalf of Hepworth Wakefield Museum, National Trust, Arts and Minds, Ida Darwin Hospital, Fermynwoods Contemporary Art, Kettles Yard, Cambridge and Cambridge University Botanic Gardens and RHS Garden Hyde Hall. She is a tutor at the Curwen Print Study Centre and delivers master classes in Printmaking with Photopolymer Plates. She has also led workshops for Leicester Print Workshops, West Yorkshire Print Workshop, Hot Bed Press, Ochre Print Studio and Red Hot Press.
Within her own practice, Susie is keen to combine traditional methods of making with contemporary techniques. This has led her to explore the potential of Printmaking with Photopolymer Plates and photogenic drawing. Both methods of making offer direct engagement with nature and accuracy in capturing detail.
