Art and Rivers
21 October - 13 November 2022
The second multi-disciplinary exhibition in our ‘Art and Environment’ series, focussing on the breadth of UK rivers and waterways. The theme is explored through printmaking, photography, ceramics and paintings to highlight the landscapes and wildlife that inhabit these diverse ecosystems.
When we were thinking about how to develop Fen Ditton Gallery’s annual Art and Environment shows, we looked back at themes from the past four years (Trees, Birds, Plantlife and Water/Land/Fenlands) so it was, in some senses, no surprise that Rivers emerged as the 2022 theme: rivers are closely associated with all of the above! The location of the gallery made the theme particularly pertinent, linked as it is to central Cambridge by the River Cam and the historic development of Fen Ditton as a village relied on access to the river.
Rivers can provide artists not only with subject matter but also an imaginative and deep connection to human culture through time since all human histories, globally, have evolved, as here in Fen Ditton, by people making use of the opportunities brought by the flow of rivers.
A percentage of sales of works from the exhibitions will go towards supporting sustainable river projects in East Anglia.
