Meet the Artist: In conversation with sculptor Nigel Hall RA

  • Fen Ditton Gallery 23 High Street, Fen Ditton Cambridge, CB5 8ST United Kingdom (map)

Please join us for an early evening view of the exhibition ‘Seeing Red’ and the opportunity to hear leading UK sculptor Nigel Hall RA discuss his work with the exhibition curator Amanda Game.

Nigel Hall is exhibiting his 2011 sculpture Around Tiger Island (Red) : a dynamic, abstract composition of evolving circular forms informed by the mass and void of a Korean island archipelago. This is shown alongside Fire a screenprint from the artist’s 2018 series of prints made in collaboration with The Print Studio, Cambridge. In a recent interview, Hall talks of the importance of movement to experiencing both sculpture and landscape – ‘the choreographical element’ that locates the viewer in constantly shifting relation to object and place.

Nigel Hall studied at the West of England College and the Royal College of Art and has worked from a studio in London since the 1970s. His works, principally made of polished wood or steel, are concerned with three dimensional space, mass and line. His abstract and geometric sculptures give as much prominence to voids and shadows as to the solidity of material and each work changes with light and viewpoint reflecting the landscapes that inspired them.

Hall is a Senior Royal Academician and has exhibited his works worldwide. Public collections include Tate Gallery; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; Kettles Yard, Cambridge.
