We are delighted to offer another opportunity for you to discover the life and work of our ‘Going Yellow’ exhibiting artists, and invite you to join us for a special Art and Coffee conversation with artist and printmaker Rebecca Jewell on Sunday 5th November at 11am.
The daughter of zoologists, Rebecca Jewell’s interest in the natural world started young, and led her to complete her BA and MA in Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Cambridge, and a PhD in Natural History Illustration at the Royal College of Art.
Drawing is central to her practice, and her intricate depictions of plants, artefacts and nature specimens, and her unique feather collages are inspired by material culture and natural history collections in museums, as well as issues around biodiversity and conservation.
In 2022, she was invited to participate in an artist’s residency at the Cambridge Conversation Initiative as part of her ongoing study of British seaweeds and the impact of climate change to the health and diversity of the marine environment. This body of work was exhibited at Fen Ditton Gallery as part of our ‘Art, Science and the Natural World’ exhibition in November 2022, and works from this series are also included in ‘Going Yellow’, alongside an exquisite drawing of a Bird of Paradise which Rebecca completed as part of her RCA doctorate, exhibited in her graduation show at the British Museum.
We hope that you will join us to hear about Rebecca’s work further, her interest in art as an exploration of museum and academic recording, and how she hopes her practice will speak both to the diverse artistic and scientific communities.
