Studio Gillies Jones is a Yorkshire hot glass studio run by the life and creative partnership of Stephen Gillies b. 1967 and Kate Jones b. 1966. The pair met when Gillies was studying glass design at Stourbridge and Jones fine art and they established their studio in 1995. They have received worldwide recognition for their complex cameo works, the traditional methods they use are practised by only a few glass makers across the world. This process involves the folding of different coloured glass bubbles over each other to produce a complex multi-layered and coloured piece.  Works are in many public and private collections including: Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; Ebeltoft Glass Museum, Denmark; Kanazawa, Japan; Bowes Museum and V & A Museum, London.

“The bowl has always been our form of choice: to free blow a symmetrical thin-walled bowl is one of the toughest disciplines in blown glass. The Buttercup Bowl is a celebration of yellow and the power of these tiny flowers to reflect their high summer colour into the world around them.  Uniquely in the plant world, buttercups have mirror-like qualities that absorb blue and green light and in so doing reflect other colours.”
