Alan Davie (1920 - 2014) began is association with Kip Gresham in 1999 when Kings College, Cambridge commissioned a portfolio of prints by 10 leading artists and had invited Gresham to advise on the project and to produce the set. Gresham nominated Davie for the project as he had long admired his work. Davie had worked in the medium of print before, most notably with the 1965 set of lithographs, the Zurich Improvisations. Screenprint was a new medium for the artist but the relationship with the imagination and skill of Gresham forged a tremendously productive collaboration, resulting in over 32 editions. in the words of the David scholar, Patrick Elliot, Senior Curator at the National Galleries, Scotland ‘the prints show Davie in classic mode. They have all the mystery, poetry, wide ranging references and certainty of touch which are the hallmarks of this remarkable artist’.
